Ellen DeGeneresWe love Ellen! And now we can love her even more as a bonafide YogaDork! The latest Shape magazine (May 2010) has the cheery talk show host waxing poetic on her love for yoga and how she made the move from punchy power practice to a more challenging (for her) routine of calming the h down.

Via Shape:

“I first started doing power yoga in L.A., which really makes no sense,” she jokes. “Power yoga? It’s the opposite of what it should be. Yoga should calm you down!”

Now she starts her mornings with a yoga session with her teacher—”a yogi, not a yoga instructor,” Ellen clarifies, and it’s to her enormous credit that she can make this distinction without sounding obnoxious—who has recently returned from India. “He’s so amazing,” she says. “His energy is so calming. For someone like me, who loves to sweat and push herself, it’s a challenge to slow down, to sit, to breathe and hold poses.” Yoga runs anywhere from an hour to an hour and a half.

Well how else did you suspect she could boogie like nobody’s business? Really. So can you guess who her guru is? If you’ve been a dedicated Ellen fan you’d know! It’s Yogi Cameron of course! He’s made such an impression on her, CamCam was actually on a 2009 episode of the show:

And here’s an awesome onset clip of Yogi Ellen demonstrating her new and improved tree pose during a break, where she quite accurately articulates discovering the glaring right vs. left body non-symmetry you find in yoga.

“One side could be Cirque du Soliel and the other side could be a 52 year old woman.” Sister, don’t we know it!

(taken from Ellen’s iphone app, uploaded March 17, 2010 – so we think it’s recent).

Here’s another Ellen yogi-quote we found from we don’t know when:

“I was in yoga the other day. I was in full lotus position. My chakras were all aligned. My mind is cleared of all clatter and I’m looking out of my third eye and everything that I’m supposed to be doing. It’s amazing what comes up, when you sit in that silence. ‘Mama keeps whites bright like the sunlight, Mama’s got the magic of Clorox 2.’”

“…..and the other side could be a 52 year old woman.”

as a seasoned yogini and ageless hippie chick past the age of 52 whose asanas make my college-age yogis gasp, I have to say..uh, what?!?!?

oh I forgot…she’s a comedian.
