New Olympic Sports: Yoga and Pole Dancing? Cast Your Vote

bikram_competition_winnersBikram’s Yoga Asana Championships are really picking up steam – we may even see it (competitive yoga) in the Olympics! Of course, lotsa yogadorks are wondering if this is a serious push and just how close they are to persuading the International Olympic Committee to come to the sweaty side. Answer? We don’t know! However, we do know the Bikram camp isn’t the only unsuspecting group with gold medals in their eyes. Thanks to yoganonymous we found some other Olympic hopefuls rallying to get their “sport” into the Games. Ladies and gents, the USA Pole Dancing Team!

via NYDailyNews:

KT Coates, a prominent pole dancer in England and director of Vertical Dance, is leading the Olympic push.

“After a great deal of feedback from the pole-dance community, many of us have decided that it’s about time pole fitness is recognized as a competitive sport, and what better way for recognition than to be part of the 2012 Olympics held in London,” she said in a petition she’s preparing for organizers of the London Olympics.

Asana and pole dancing, maybe they should join forces! Good luck to all the able-bodied half-nekkid acrobatic physical maneuverists in their pursuit of the Olympic dream.

I think Competitive Poll Dancing would make about as great an event as either of these two. But that’s just me. (and me!)

pole dancing is hard! it’s definitely an athletic pursuit, though i’m not sure if it’s olympics-worthy.

… and i also don’t understand why every almost-sport out there wants validation and recognition from inclusion in the olympics. they’re a gong show ~ the athletes themselves are hard-working, committed, etc… but the event is one big PR stunt with nothing but tourism and corporate interests in mind.

Olympic pole dancing! :D I wonder how they’d choose the judges for this?

I think you hit the nail on the head. To increase the chance of getting in, pole dancing and yoga should combine forces and techniques. Let’s call it PoleYoga. It would be a shoo-in.

pole dancing, competitive hotdog eating, yoga–they’re all the same. all of them should be olympic events.
especially yoga–where a killer competitive instinct is a must.
f* ohm, i want a medal.

To make yoga an Olympic sport would degrade the essence of yoga. There are plenty of lame-o styles of yoga that are so far from its essence and instead all about the ego. Let’s not promote that even farther…and get back to yoga try purpose/eight limbs.
