Yesterday was Guru Purnima, the day in Indian tradition where Gurus, teachers, those who bring us from darkness to light, are acknowledged and honored. Today is the birth date of Yoga Hero Sri K Pattabhi Jois, who was born in 1915, which would make him 95 years old. Jois left his earthly body in May [...]
Shout out to the late Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, who left his earthliness one year ago. He would be proud to know we are all still practicing practicing practicing…

[Because It's Monday!] Yoga Teacher FAIL?
Yikes! Um…we’re kinda speechless about this one. A keen-eyed tipster tipped us off to this rather, uh, gripping snapshot from the ridiculously popular cheezburger failblog. And we’re fairly certain this is the late Pattabhi Jois, anyone confirm? Obviously we know (can assume?) nothing scandalous is going on here. Butt…*cringe*
Also, [...]
This Sunday, July 26, marks what would have been Sri K Pattabhi Jois‘ 94th Earthly Birthday Celebration.
Some may recall his spiritual birthday July 7th as the Guru Purnima, which as part of traditional Indian culture, was celebrated as the day of honoring all spiritual leaders who were born this month.
We wish a happy birthday to Guruji!

Last week we mentioned the memorial being held in Guruji’s name, Sun June 14, hosted at Donna Karan’s Urban Zen foundation. If you were washing your yoga mat that day, or perhaps seeing the final performance of Guys and Dolls on Broadway (narf) and couldn’t attend, head over to YD pal Yoga Nation for some [...]
This week’s issue of New York Magazine recognizes the life, and primarily the legacy of Sri K Pattabhi Jois, in his success in helping to lead yoga, “the once-exotic discipline” to “nearly as mainstream as jogging” in the US.
It’s an interesting take on why Jois, and Ashtanga in particular, hit a groove with the Type [...]

“Do your practice and all is coming.” Sri K. Pattabhi Jois
Tons of sympathy and words of kindness are swirling around the virtual yogasphere in honor of Guruji’s life. We spoke yesterday in remembrance of Ashtanga patriarch Pattabhi Jois, and thanks to yogi tweeter @davekennedy for alerting us, we can share with you this heartfelt tribute [...]
Sri Krishna Pattabhi Jois (July 26, 1915 – May 18, 2009)
All good things must pass. Nothing lasts forever. Of course. But there are still some things we like to take for granted, that we hope will never leave us. Today we, and yoga dorks all over the world, mourn the passing of modern Ashtanga [...]
Calling all Ashtanga fans and all around yogi practitioners. If you’ve not yet heard, 93-year-old Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, grandfather of Ashtanga yoga, has become ill and is currently bed-bound in his home in Mysore, India. If you’ve ever felt compelled to express your gratitude or appreciation to Guruji, now’s your chance. Kind soul and [...]
