Recession

What good is history if we can’t learn from it, right? Lots of experts, and non-perts, are pontificating on comparisons of today’s financial meltdown to 1930′s Depression Era America. And they’re finding plenty of similarities in the political and financial departments – big banks, bubbles, unemployment, New Deals – but what of the nation’s health?  [...]

We’ve been wondering how long it would take for news on the health of Corporate Yoga to pop up, because we’ve been waiting for a good reason to talk about it. Amid the turbulence, strung out citizens seem to be clinging to yoga as stress relief even more these days, and who could need it [...]

So we saw the headline “Credit Crunch Yoga” and thought it was our YogaTag pal (of the actual creditcrunchyoga.com). Alas, more than anything else, this post on trendhunter is an ad for Les Leventhal’s $20/mo podcast yoga. Shysters. And then we thought, well, $20 is OK, but there are plenty of yoga videos on youtube [...]

As some of you may have realized, teaching yoga is not an easy full-time job. It can be a right struggle finding enough work to pull in the cash to cover monthly expenses. We mentioned in our “Recession-Resilience: Yoga and the McDonald’s Happy Meal” post that this economy is taking a toll on peoples’ wallets [...]

According to today’s news the yoga business is alive and well, thriving even! Frazzled members of Crunch and Equinox gyms are swarming to even more yoga and meditation classes added to the January schedule. Maybe yoga really is recession proof! Or, maybe not. We may take issue with the philosophy pushing, exorbitantly high-priced yoga wear and creepy political ads, (etc.), but if there’s one thing Lululemon does do right it’s offer free classes. Many locations (which seem to be springing up like weeds – check outside your window) offer free weekly classes taught by instructors from local studios [...]

Just as we were declaring the death of the $20 yoga class … A new studio called Yoga by Donation has opened in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. And guess what? There are NO set fees, 20 classes per week taught by a staff of 6 instructors, and the best part in our opinion, FREE mats! Holy [...]

Boy, this recession is really going to have us all wrinkled, hairy and unkempt. According to the New York Times Styles section, vanity beauty addicts are stepping awayyy from the Botox. But it’s not just the (completely superfluous) buttocks implants (for real), it’s the whole kit ‘n kaboodle of cosmetic procedures including manicures, pedicures, facials and waxing. Why? People [...]

Whether we’d like to admit it or not (and we’d rather not), these are certainly troubled times, and the glow of the holidays is kind of taking the edge off a little, but once the tinsel has worn away what will 2009 bring? Well, apparently theft, depression and overall gloomsville:  In the coming months, mental health experts expect [...]

Lululemon Athletica announced 3rd Quarter earnings yesterday and it’s not so pretty! Outlook for 2008 year-end closing forecasts have been scaled wayyy back. From Bloomberg: Lululemon dropped $3.38, or 32 percent, to $7.08 at 4 p.m. in Nasdaq Stock Market composite trading, the steepest decline since the retailer sold shares to the public in July [...]
